At BRMC, you and your child are special to us and will be treated accordingly by a highly trained, experienced and professional staff of nurses and physicians. We care for mothers and babies from surrounding counties in West Virginia and Virginia. By choosing BRMC as your delivery hospital, you will have chosen one of the most technically advanced hospitals in the region. BRMC adds approximately 750-800 babies to the population each year. We offer a family centered atmosphere featuring deliveries in birthing rooms and rooming in, if desired. In addition to caring for you and your baby while in the hospital, we offer a variety of classes ranging from healthy pregnancy to prepared childbirth. The instructors for these classes are our very own nurses who give of their time to educate pregnant women and their families. Below is an overview of the classes for your convenience.
Healthy Pregnancy Classes are offered every other month to expectant parents early in their pregnancy. Topics that will be discussed are nutrition, fetal development, and postpartum care. The participants in this class will tour the labor and delivery area and view several films concerning pregnancy, Cost-free, pre-registration is appreciated.
Sibling Classes are offered every other month to expectant parents with other children. This class is aimed toward children and what they can expect when "mommy goes to the hospital" and when "mommy comes home with a new baby." Children in this class will come to the postpartum unit so that they may see and better understand where mommy will be. Cost-free, pre- registration is appreciated. Big Brother/Big Sister T-shirts are available for $5.00.
Prepared Childbirth Classes are offered monthly to expectant parents 4-6 weeks prior to their expected delivery date. Topics that will be discussed are signs/symptoms of labor, stages of labor, non-conforming labor, medications, and cesarean sections. The participants will learn relaxation skills and breathing techniques. A tour of the labor and delivery area and childbirth films will also be seen. Cost is $20.00 -pre-registration is appreciated.
Breast-feeding Classes are offered once a month by a certified lactation consultant. This class is not required to breast feed but is highly recommended to new mothers or those with no breast-feeding experience. Your lactation consultant will provide you with valuable information on getting baby started, proper latching-on and positions, pumping breast milk and becoming comfortable with breast-feeding as the best possible way to feed your baby.
